The moment I heard my phone start making that awful noise while saying that spotters had confirmed a wall cloud with developing funnels just to the west of Fergus Falls, I immediately loaded the entire family (grandma included!) into the car and gave chase. Our first stop was the large hill on the way out HWY 27. From there we could clearly see the wall cloud and little funnels spinning off from it, but the deluge threatened, so set out in search of a new vantage point. We booked it to the south west, stopping to get a read of the situation from time to time. The family was a bit tense. Fergus had disappeared behind a wall of white, and the wall cloud continued to swirl menacingly above us. At one point we were within a half mile of the developing dust whirl beneath the wall cloud. Unreal! I’ve still yet to see my first tornado, but tonight was probably as close as I’ve come.
